Hunting Info
Bearpaw Outfitters offer winter Mt. Lion hunts
in Utah which is known as a top Mountain Lion
(cougar) hunting destination.
With more than 30 years experience hunting
lions, and hundreds of Mt Lions caught, Bearpaw
Outfitters are one of the most experienced
cougar hunting guides in the business. Lion
hunting is not just a sideline like with most
other outfitters, it’s a longtime passion
and serious business for Bearpaw Outfitters.
Licenses and Hunter Ed
You must purchase
your Utah Cougar Tag and License
at least 7 days in advance of
hunting. Licenses are available
online or
over-the-counter at any regional office for $323.00. Hunters born after Jan 1,
1965 are required to have Hunter Ed to purchase
a license and hunt. Bearpaw Outfitters will
assist you with your licenses.
The Mt Lion Hunting
Season is open from December to June in most
areas. Best hunting occurs during winter when
there's good tracking snow.
Most of the
hunt areas are located in northern
Utah near Price and Vernal.
Elevations range from 6,000 to 9,000 feet. The
terrain
in this area is easier terrain than the
areas that are hunted in Idaho. Hunters who need
a hunt in easier country should choose a hunt in
Utah over Idaho.
Trophy Quality
and
Shot Opportunity
Most Mt. Lions weigh from 75 to 160 pounds and skin
out between 7 to 9 feet in length.
Bearpaw
Outfitters prefer to hunt for Tom's only and we do not tell anyone
when they have to
shoot. The choice of which cat to chase and which cat you want to shoot is
entirely your choice.
Bearpaw Outfitters can usually
estimate
within 10 to 20 pounds what a cat will weigh and tell
you it’s sex by looking at the tracks. Male cougar
tracks look much different than female cougar
tracks. This is important because there's no
sense wasting time chasing a cat that you have no
interest in taking. The time can be more
wisely spent locating a cat
of the size you want.
Bearpaw Outfitters clients have taken many record book cats, but it’s
not easy to find record sized cats. We'll hunt
hard to make your hunt as successful as possible
for the size of cat you want.
Most shots range from 10 to 40 yards. Bearpaw
Outfitters can’t guarantee success, quantity, or
the size of cats that will be seen because this
is a wild hunt, but they'll work hard to give
you the very best hunt possible.
The most successful hunting method
is to travel mountain roads in 4x4 trucks
watching for fresh cougar tracks.
Bearpaw Outfitters may use a
snowmobile, ATV, or hike into remote
areas looking for cougar tracks. Once a good set
of fresh tracks is located the dogs are released
and the chase is on. Because the hounds can
quickly cover so much country, Bearpaw Outfitters will keep you with the
vehicle until the cat is bayed
up, then Bearpaw Outfitters will get you as close as
possible with the vehicle before hiking in to get to the cat.
Additional Game
Ask about hunting
Coyotes, Cow Elk, Bobcat, Upland Birds, or
Waterfowl.
Guiding and Accommodations
Utah
Cougar
hunts are Guided 1x1 or 2x1 and most guided
hunts are conducted as "Town Hunts".
You
will stay at a comfortable motel in town. Your
guide will pick you up & return you daily.
This hunt is priced lower than our Idaho hunts
because your room and restaurant meals are not
included so remember to budget for these
expenses.
Temperature &
Weather
Late fall and
winter temps often range from 0 to 50 degrees
and snow is likely. Check the current
weather forecast before you leave with the
Weather Link on the
Details page. Utah gets a lot of
sun so the highways dry quickly after a storm
and travel is usually not hampered for long.
Bring insulated boots, gloves, thermal
underwear, and plenty of warm clothing suitable
for cold snowy conditions.
What's Not Included
Your personal
gear, cooler, tape, marker pen,
motel room, restaurant meals,
taxidermy,
shipping, licenses, gratuities, and any other
items not listed as included.
Travel, Itinerary, and Trophy
Care
Fly into the Salt Lake City Airport
and get a rental car, it’s only about a 2 to 4 hour drive from Salt
Lake City to meet
Bearpaw Outfitters at most hunt locations. You
will want to arrive the evening before your hunt
begins. Plan to hunt the duration of the hunt if
needed.
After you harvest your Mt Lion, your guide will
skin the cat and remove any meat that you wish to take home,
(the meat is very good eating). Stop at the Wal-Mart or Grocery Store and get a 30 to 40
quart cooler, a roll of shipping tape, a black
marker pen, and 5 pounds of dry ice. Put the dry
ice inside the cooler to quick
freeze everything on your way to the airport. Before you go into the airport, remove any
remaining dry ice, tape up the cooler, and mark
the cooler with your contact details so you can
take it home on the plane with you. Don't forget
to insure your baggage.
