Cougar Hunting Info

Bearpaw Outfitters have been outfitting and guiding Mountain Lion hunts for more than 30 years and have caught hundreds of Mt Lions. Lion hunting is not just a sideline, it’s a passion for Bearpaw Outfitters. Utah is well known as a top Mountain Lion hunting destination and Bearpaw Outfitters offer Mt. Lion hunts in several areas of northern Utah where success has been 50% to 100% most years.

Over-The-Counter Licenses are available for several cougar units.

A very important factor to consider when choosing a Mt. Lion outfitter is what size cat you will be told to shoot. Bearpaw Outfitters do not tell anyone they have to shoot any animal. The choice of which cats you want us to chase and which cat you want to shoot is completely your choice.

Bearpaw Outfitters can usually estimate within 20 pounds what a cat will weigh and tell you it’s sex by looking at the tracks. Male cougar tracks look different than female cougar tracks. The size and shape of the track, and the width and length between steps help determine the sex and weight of a cat. This is important because there's no sense wasting time on an animal that you have no interest in taking. The time can be much more wisely spent trying to locate a cat of the size that you really want.

Licenses and Hunter Ed

You must purchase your Utah Cougar Tag and License online or over-the-counter from any license dealer for $323.00 at least 7 days in advance of hunting. Hunters born after Jan 1, 1965 are required to have Hunter Ed to purchase a license and hunt. Bearpaw Outfitters will assist you with your licenses. The Mt Lion Hunting Season is open from December to June in most areas. Best hunting occurs during winter when there's good tracking snow.

Location and Terrain

Most of the hunt areas are located in northern Utah near Price and Vernal. Elevations range from 6,000 to 9,000 feet. The terrain in this area is easier terrain than the areas that are hunted in Idaho. Hunters who need a hunt in easier country should choose a hunt in Utah over Idaho.

Trophy Quality and Shot Opportunity

Mt. Lions which are also known as Cougar or Puma usually weigh from 75 to 150 pounds and skin out between 7 to 9 feet in length. Bearpaw Outfitters clients have actually taken many record book cats, but don’t assume it’s easy to find a record sized cat. When a big old tom is found, you can figure you have beaten the odds of the average hunter.

The most successful hunting method is to travel mountain roads in 4x4 trucks watching for fresh cougar tracks. Bearpaw Outfitters may even use a snowmobile, ATV, or hike into remote areas looking for cougar tracks. Once a good set of fresh tracks is located the dogs are released and the chase is on. Because the hounds can quickly cover so much country, Bearpaw Outfitters will keep you with the vehicle until the cat is bayed up, then Bearpaw Outfitters will get you as close as possible with the vehicle before hiking in to get to the cat.

Opportunity and Additional Game

Shot opportunity usually runs 50% to 100% on these lion hunts. Most shots range from 10 to 40 yards. Bearpaw Outfitters can’t guarantee success, quantity, or the size of cats that will be seen because this is a wild hunt, but they'll work hard to give you the very best hunt possible. Coyotes, Cow Elk, Bobcat, Upland Birds, or Waterfowl can also be hunted if your hunt is scheduled well in advance.

Guiding and Accommodations

Utah Cougar hunts are Guided 1x1 or 2x1. Many hunts are conducted as "Town Hunts", but a Camp can be used when conditions are not too cold. If you prefer to camp please ask when you book your hunt and then call just before the hunt and ask about the weather forecast, if conditions are not too severe we can often camp if desired.

Motel “Town Hunts”:  Stay at a comfortable motel in town. BPO will pick up & return guided hunters daily. Unguided hunters drive themselves. Your room and restaurant meals are not included so remember to budget for these expenses.

Hosted Tent Camp:  The camp is accessed by auto and usually has 4 to 10 Guided or Unguided hunters in camp. Includes tents, camp gear, portable toilet, kitchen area, water, cooked meals and services provided by Bearpaw staff.

Spike Camp:  This is a very modest camp for 1 to 3 hunters, with heat in the sleeping quarters and easy to prepare meals. Call before the hunt to verify that conditions are not too severe to camp. Bring your warm sleeping bag for the cot.

Temperature & Weather

Late fall and winter temps often range from 0 to 50 degrees and snow is likely. Check the current weather forecast before you leave with the Weather Link on the Details page. Utah gets a lot of sun so the highways dry quickly after a storm and travel is usually not hampered for long. Bring insulated boots, gloves, thermal underwear, and plenty of warm clothing suitable for cold snowy conditions.

What's Not Included

Your personal gear, cooler, tape, marker pen, sleeping bag, motel rooms, restaurant meals, taxidermy, shipping, licenses, gratuities, and any other items not listed as included.

Travel, Itinerary, and Trophy Care

Fly into the Salt Lake City Airport and take a rental car, it’s only about a 2 to 4 hour drive from Salt Lake City to meet Bearpaw Outfitters at most hunt locations. You will want to arrive the evening before your hunt begins. Plan to hunt the duration of the hunt if needed and depart in the evening after your hunt ends. Reserve a motel room near the airport for your last evening so you can clean up for your trip home and easily make it to the airport on time in the morning.

After you harvest your Mt Lion, your guide will skin the cat and remove any meat that you wish to take home. The meat is actually very good eating. Go to the nearest Wal-Mart or Grocery Store and get a 30 to 40 quart cooler, a roll of shipping tape, a black marker pen, and 5 pounds of dry ice. Put the dry ice inside the cooler to quick freeze everything on your way to the airport. Before you go into the airport, remove any remaining dry ice, tape up the cooler, and mark the cooler with your contact details so you can take it on the plane.
